NUMBER SYSTEM(LECTURE 1)

LESSON 1  NUMBER SYSTEM
Dear Students,

Welcome to the new session and to your new class!!

It is rightly said that “Anything well begun is half done”. Similarly I cannot deny that anything that is started with positive attitude is already done

So as you all enter your classes today make a list of even the smallest ideas that take you  to the path of success

And, I am sure we are here to guide you in the same, all the way

Respect your parents, Obey your teachers and Believe in yourself

Wish you all a grand and successful year

Welcome you all once again!!

General Instructions:

1.      All of you will maintain 2 registers for Maths ( Set  A and  Set B) plus 1 practical file(you will be explained about the practical work later).

2.      Make the index including S.No. ,Date,Topic,Sign.

Guidelines for the Blog

·         The text in Red, is to be written in your register

·         The text in blue is to be viewed by clicking on it

·         The text in green is to be practiced for home work

·         Feel free to clarify your doubts by dropping a comment before going ahead in the lesson.



  1. Take your SET-A Mathematics Register
  2. Our handwriting reflects a lot about us. It will be awesome if you use good presentation and cursive hand writing
  3. Make a column on the right hand side, if you need to do any rough work
  4. Write today's date on the line after that. We need to save paper. Write the SDG – 12 : Responsible Consumption and Production.  Let us be responsible global citizens. One good thing that Coronovirus is teaching us! That is be responsible global citizens.



Please write the learning outcomes as mentioned below :

I will be able to:

·         Recall what are natural numbers,whole numbers, integers and rationals.

·         State the relation between different number systems

·         Find rational number(s)  between given numbers.




                       



You all have learnt about  various type of numbers in your previous classes. Infact, it is difficult to think about maths without numbers. Even numbers play an important role in our lives. Almost all things we do involve numbers.

Let us first revise, what you  have done before!!!








                                         

What is Number ?    

A number is a mathematical object used to count, measure, and label.

What is Natural Number?

Set of counting numbers is called the Natural Numbers. The symbol used for natural  number is N.

N=1,2,3,4,5,..

What is whole number?

Set of Natural numbers plus Zero is called the Whole Numbers. The symbol used for whole  number is W

W=0,1,2,3,4,5,...

Integers

Let’s look at what are integers

Integers is the set of all the whole number plus the negative of Natural Numbers The symbol used for integer  is Z.

Z comes from the  German word“zahlen”, which means“to count”.



Eg.  Z= 7,−6,−5,−4,−3,−2,−1,0,1,2,3,4,5,6,..

Rational Number (Write it down in the notebook)

 q ≠ 0
 A number is called rational if it can be expressed in the form  of p/q where p and q are integers,
 ( q is not 0). The symbol used for rational number is Q.

‘Rational’ comes from the word ‘ratio’, and Q comes from the word ‘quotient’





Now, answer the following questions:

1.      Can we say all naturals are whole numbers?

2.      Which number is present in the set of whole numbers but not in naturals?

3.      Which integer is neither positive nor negative?

4.      Can you name any whole number which is not an integer?

5.      State one number which is an integer but not a whole number.

6.      Is -1 an integer? Is -1 a rational number?



I am sure , you all, knew the answers.

Now, let’s see what  can  we conclude out of all these answers

Draw the diagram given below


                  



1.      Every natural number is a whole number but not vice versa.

2.      Every whole number is an integer  but not vice versa.

3.      Every integer  is a rational  number but not vice versa.



Now, you can attempt Q4 of Ex1.1 as H.W




Look at the image given below, (Take it down in the notebook)

Ques: 1. Is zero a rational number? Can you write it in the form

p/ q, where p and q are integers  and q ≠ 0?
